Bengali Style

Apr 18, 2015

It was last day of 2071. The day was ending up, and there was  celebration mood all over. It was obvious for me to see lot of wishes in Social Media from Nepalese.
However, it was just this day I figured it out that it was not just Nepalese New Year. Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Laos celebrates new year on same day. I don’t know how this happened or the history behind, but this was something good.

Our hostel had peoples from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Laos too. Laos was minimal in number, so I don’t think they did anything special. My Sri Lankan friends from Pune celebrated, however I did not find any huge celebrations in hostel. Maybe they did it inside the room.

For Nepalese, it was something normal. Getting drunk, no matter what the celebration is. Or ganjas! No idea about what girls did! Ahh Yes! They went to temple the next day, and that too, 3 groups into three different temples!

So, at the time when Nepalese were almost all drunk, they cut the cake at 12, and slept like pigs.

However, the things were different for Bangladesh. They did street painting, they all were so united. All girls and boys, they painted on Hostel Street. At first I thought it was rangoli, but no, that was a good paint that surely will last for more than couple of months there in the street. It was raining, the roads had to be wet, but they managed it.

There were Muslims and Hindu in their team, and they worked together, celebrated together, shared happiness together, shared wishes together. It was not that Bengalis don’t drink. Despite drinking being illegal in Bangladesh, I have found Bengalis here in India making full utilization of their freedom with enough alcoholic mood. They could have celebrated being drunk too, but their new year celebration was an example to students from more than 40 countries in the hostel.

After Nepalese woke up, with hangover mood, they then discovered that Bengali celebrated too through their Facebook post. All they could do was like their facebook post! They all taught, Nepalese have lot to learn from others through this celebration!

Happy New Year 2072, Nepal
Happy New Year 1422, Bangladesh
Happy New Year 5063, Sri Lanka
Happy New Year, Laos!!
