Half of the world recognizes 'The Fault in Our Stars', as a
movie, and the other half remembers it rather as novel. The case is not any
different with Gone Girl, which has IMDb rating of 8.1. Or, be it movies like
Divergent, or The Giver.
Although, people may argue that movies can't replace
books, because for audiences of Kite Runner, or Beauty and the Beast, people
may claim that the novel was far perfect than the movie. But, there had been
enough examples to prove that not all books can be as good as movies. People
may not even have the idea that Fight Club's concept was all extracted out of
movies. Or the popular movie Forrest Gump and The Godfather, which had good
number of book sales record equally turned out awesome in movies world. The
case is not any different with The Shawshank redemption of 1994. Now, maybe it
can be concluded that if it is the movie that can be weighty or the novel is
much more about how the movie is developed and the way audience perceive the
movie with reference to novel.
It can therefore be regarded that novels can be great source
of stories for movies. Somehow easy for audience, who would lag time and effort
to watch entire movie as well, and easy for movie developers as they could easy
track their audience. 'Three Idiots' certainly turned out to be much popular
than 'Five point someone'. India has been able to produce number of stories on
the same basis as well, and the profit earned seems to be really appealing. Large
number of movies, which were based on novels throughout the world including
Asia had turned out to be of huge success.
While, one group regarded movie not
as competent as novel, others who had not gone through novels felt that they
went through the novel as well. Ignoring the debatable issue, and accepting
that they can be competent enough, it can be said that movies made out of
novels do have equal potential somehow or the other too.
Now, Nepal is certainly a rich in literary world. Be it for
either reason - showing one story of South Asia, or because it was really
appreciated, Parijat's creation has been recognized world wide. That should be enough to prove how rich
Nepalese actually are. Besides, creation of Laxmi Prasad Devkota, or B.P.
Koirala has separate charm and weightage. Getting back historically, Nepalese
certainly have large number of wonderful creation, and the trend of such
literary contribution is still up to date. Be it Narayan Wagle, or Subin
Bhattarai; Nayan Raj Pandey or Ravi Thapa - Nepalese world of literature is
moving ahead at appreciative pace as well.
Also, with the movement of time, as per the need, visual
form of these creation has been brought out. Krishna Dharabasi's creation -
Jhola, which was a perfectly appreciated and loved novel was equally
appreciated when the movie of same story was made. Garima Pant's performance
was appreciated throughout, and the movie had such a wonderful issue to address
as well. Beside showing how our society was back then, the movie also
successfully addressed the novel and gave novel justice.
However, Jhola is only the case. As, there has been number
of movies made out of literary creation in Nepalese context. Lil Bahadur
Chhetri's popular novel Basai was picturized in movie as well. Similarly, Guru
Prasad Mainali's Paral ko Aago has been produced in movie as well. Or, Prem
Pinda, which was produced by neer Shah, was adapted from the play by Balkrishna
Sama. Or, Laxmi Prasad Devkota's Munamandan. Basanti - the creation of Diamond
Shumsher Rana and Seto Bagh of same writer with historical background had
wonderful story to present, should have been a popular and loved movie in
Nepalese Film industry. Gopal Prasad Rimal's creation Mashan had well skilled
actors and actress in the mean time as well.
However, these movies did not gain as much hype as it had to
gain. Despite of having such a wonderful stories, they failed to obtain any
popularity; and beside Jhola, people barely even know if the movie exists.
Besides failing to gain popularity, they failed to give justice to such
wonderful creation as well. One thing that these movies failed to realize was,
they didn't give second thought about realism that people would seek in such
type of movies. Since, these movies failed to identify their target group and
tried to jumble up every mass, they ended up in failure. Failure - a reason,
because even when they are in youtube, where interested can watch them in free,
number of views are not satisfactory.
Movie producers failed to realize that people don't look for
item dance in every movie, nor do they seek for over exaggeration. High
investment is not enough to attract audience either. Hence, the movie developer
had to realize that there had to be large number of factors to be considered in
the long run. Subin Bhattarai's novel probably will gain justice. It is
important to realize the difference between literature based movie and
commercial movies. Only then those who are really interested in novel will give
a try on depicting how the pictorial form is actually being made.
Promotion is next factor that seem to be lagging behind for
these range of movies as well. Ultimately, the level of effort itself is not
satisfactory. It is important to respect those literature figures, and the only
way to respect them is by showing dedicated effort to their work. Only then
Nepalese literature will be seen by global world with appreciative view.
