Poor Show of Political Movies

Aug 6, 2017

There had always been movies like Primary Colors, Selma or Lincoln which had wonderfully shown the reflection out of political figure in the industry; highlighting the past and showing the background. They have not ended only with views, but also had been respected in Oscars.

These political movies obviously will have huge impact and consequence. They can make fun of whole system with satirical plot, or can educate the mass about whole picture. All the President's Men not was more than the movie after all.
India had been practicing this sort of political touch since early time itself. Maybe because they have India - Pakistan's political issue to present at large scale; or it could be because they have huge audience scale; they have made movies like Rajneeti to Bharat Bandh; and have been able to generate next curious mass. Dropping down to Nepali Film Industry, we certainly seem to be lagging behind.
It is not that there had not been movies as such in Nepalese Film Industry. From very beginning of Das Dhunga's era, there had been movies trying to show similar aspects. Although Nepali Movie - Highway tried to portray consequence of single day bandha and it's impact; the trend ended there itself. Again, we can see how Bhairabh tried to highlight Terai based issues, but could not give some concrete shape; and could not attract large audience as well.
Nothing ever came like Singhadurbar, after the end of episode. Singhadurbar had made wonderful attempt to show how politics can be good and well performed. As, everything will have two aspects - positive and negative; movies are wonderful platform to convey the information, impact and prevention out of politics. Maybe it was Gauri Malla, or maybe it was foreign aid, which all combined for the perfection within the series; and which attempted to portray the wonderful picture attempting to create positive vibes.
Primary issue that troubles in creation of such movie is through strict censorship of the board, where it is obvious to fear that trying to portray the reality could be censored. After the Nepal was declared republic, it was important to show the struggle that Nepal went through. Again, it is not that we lack stories in this issue. What Nepali Film industry could never realize and learn is simplicity. There should not be any story where something has to be done, but a simple story of anything can be presented. It's much more about presentation, that will be appreciated and loved by the mass in the end.
Again, the movies have been developed on biased assumption, with top down approach. Nikhil Upreti still does not sound good for Terai based movies. Maybe, Najeer was better option. Dayahang Rai obviously will not be preferred there. Although, Saugat Malla has wonderfully acted presenting himself as part of Madhesi community, it would still be effective if it is entirely based on the story there.
It is through such movies, ethnic groups can assert their identity. Hill Bahuns and Chettris don't have all the story, and that should be well appreciated. Besides, it is also the fact that these movies can attract the mass that never had political knowledge. Political movies should be able to portray current or historical events, or social conditions in partisan way so that they could inform the spectator. Hutu and Tutsi's conflict had been clearly presented to the world about how Rwanda went through Genocide. Similarly, the role of Mandela in different aspects has been provided in beautiful manner as well.
Political movies have different strength which could hit the audience mass consciously, or subconsciously. It has been proved that movies influence political views. We also know that there are lot of politics being practiced within Nepali film industry. However, these movies seem to be lagging behind to large extent.
Sanrakshan's trailer has been gaining huge attention at this time. If this movie can create impact and bring some distinct vibe in Nepali Film Industry, maybe the turning center can rely there. These type of movies seems to be less experimented, which is much needed situation at present. Strength of political movies can lead to indirect benefit to entire nation. Let's hope for the best!
