Dashain – Prime Time for Music and Movies

Oct 5, 2018

What makes any festival so popular and so welcoming? Maybe, it is food, maybe there are drinks - but over the most - it is the social bonding that one would get to enjoy over the time. Be it Christmas, Eid, Loshar, Diwali or Holi; more than the essence, what counts most is the social bonding within. People from far, they just come to gear up with their people, with their society. And there itself, the food, music and other aspects gain certain space around. Music and Movies would have the best time to gain their market during this particular time. Be it in Hollywood, when the best movies are released right before Christmas and New Year, or in Bollywood, when the most awaited movies are released right before Diwali or New Year - festive season would be the prime time to capture market.

So, the people gather around at home towns in Nepal too, they get together with their family and friends. Obviously, they would want to spend time together. Had there been any such most awaited movies; this group would certainly plan for it. But, what we lag is any such dedicated and concentrated movies - resulting in dumbness. So, the only way to be together would be food, and cards. Had, few popular movies been promoted in such a way that it will be presented during Dashain, creating eagerness among audiences; that would have pretty high chances of capturing the market. But, we are aware about which Hollywood movie is about to be released during Christmas, which Bollywood will be releasing during Diwali; but unaware about which Nepali movie is about to be released during Dashain.
Dashain targeted movies would not only help to generate revenues within Nepal, but equally contribute from Diasporas as well. Those mass residing outside would have their own pattern and style of Dashain Celebration; and obviously they would miss their home. So, be it by being around with their friends, or organizing some Nepali events - they would celebrate the movie. Selling copyright to someone credible in those places would not just help them in celebration, but would equally help in generating higher revenues. It is agreeable that the movies would not be able to generate revenues in wider scale from Kathmandu, but, people would obviously watch it later if the movie ensures quality.
Hollywood believes that Chirstmas is magical time of the year for the box office and Oscar race. They release large number of movies on this particular time. Be that Avatar, which was released during December of 2009 or The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The case repeats with Bollywood too; but Nepali Film Industry has really been missing this prime time. It is not that movies are not released during this time, they are released for sure - but what they lag behind is in promotion. Because, like the way people have been waiting for Bohemian Rhapsody to be released, there are not any Nepali movies.
Not just in case of movies, the similar case goes with music too. Be it Taylor Swift, or any star - they seek for optimum time to release their songs. The trend used to be popular decade back, when Nabin K Bhattarai, Nima Rumba or any new coming artist would seek pre Dashain time to release their song. They would then get ample of opportunities abroad for concerts during Dashain too. But, the musical world has been missing out those peak times too. And the only thing that contributes in the end would be Yogeshwor Amatya's Dashain Dasha song, or Abhisek and Prateek's Dashain Ayo song.
Our culture has always been linked up with medias. as we have been following up our past trends. District level dance competition, or any any such competition - pre Dashain would be the best time. Concerts, or melas of villages - same would be the peak time. With growing trend, the way of celebration is being changed. But, the thirst for passing out time in beautiful and memorable way has always remained among people. Those gathered in their home town would not be that desperate to attend the concert, watch the movie - as that was never promoted indicating that is Dashain special; and there itself they lose wide range of market.
Artists would have a tough time, as they would have comittments of events abroad. But, that should not be the limit. Like school book sellers make the best during New Year, computer seller make it during CAN Infotech, vehicle seller make it during NADA Show - the best time for movies and music to hit market is nothing except Dashain, and that has to be utilized to fullest in order to ensure a fruitful result.
